Common ankle & foot pain causes, symptoms & treatments

Calf Muscle Strain

Cause

A calf strain is a tear in one of the calf muscles, either the gastrocnemius or the soleus - which attach to the heel via the Achilles tendon. This typically happens when the muscle contracts forcefully during activities such as running, football, or tennis, particularly when pushing off from a standing start.Medial (inside) Gastrocnemius muscle head is the most commonly affected.

Symptoms

The main symptoms are pain swelling, sometimes bruising at the back of the lower leg, stiffness, and reduced mobility, which can make walking or pointing the toes when exercising difficult. Going on tiptoes, it’s also painful.

Treatment

Our Bristol physiotherapy team uses a combination of hands-on therapy muscle therapy, ultrasound acupuncture electrotherapy, and graded exercise programmes to restore muscle strength, flexibility, and function. Early intervention supports quicker recovery and reduces the risk of recurrence. Kinesio tapping is also used

Ankle Sprain

Cause

An ankle sprain occurs when the ligaments that support the ankle are overstretched or torn, often following a sudden twist, trip, or misstep. The ankle is made up of three bone surfaces – the tibia, the fibula of the leg, and the talus of the ankle – all held together by strong ligaments that provide stability.

When sprained, these ligaments become damaged, leading to pain around the joint, swelling, bruising, and restricted movement. Without proper rehabilitation, ongoing weakness and repeated ankle twisting or rolling  can develop.

Symptoms

Acute pain normally on the side of the ankle sprain most commonly on the outside of the ankle called an inversion sprain. The ankle can become very inflamed and as the bruising comes out become black and yellow.

Cause

It is particularly common in active children who run and jump regularly, and tends to occur more often in boys, especially during growth spurts. Flat feet may also contribute to the pain.
There is also a recognised link between vitamin D deficiency and heel pain. Vitamin D deficiency is common in children in the UK, particularly in those with darker skin tones or who have limited sun exposure. The main symptom is heel pain that worsens with activity, often preventing participation in sports or PE.

Symptoms

Sever’s Disease typically causes heel pain in children that worsens with running, jumping, or long periods on their feet, and eases with rest. The heel may feel tender when squeezed, and some children may limp, walk on their toes, or complain of stiffness, especially after activity.
