Back pain effects 70% of the population and can be very debilitating. Back pain affects around 50% of adults in the UK and, when it becomes persistent, it can be debilitating, interfering with daily activities and reduce your quality of life. You may also experience symptoms such as leg pain or sciatica. Back pain can appear suddenly after bending awkwardly or lifting something heavy, but more often it develops gradually due to repetitive strain or poor posture. The cause of the pain is due to a strain of the visible joints muscles and ligaments of the lower back which become inflamed with muscle spasm.

Mechanical Lower Back Pain

Cause

A prain to the vertebra joints of the lumbar spine (lower back) and the pelvis or sacroiliac joints (buttocks and sciatica). The pain can also be  where the mid back joins the lower back where the lumbar spine meets the thoracic spine

Symptoms

It can feel sharp or dull, localised or spreading across both sides of the back. Pain may radiate between from waist  lower back into the buttocks and even to the hips and down the upper legs. Sometimes pins and needles, tingling, or weakness are also present. Sometimes his muscle spasm which causes the patient to lean often away from the side of pain. Coughing and sneezing and rapid moments can irritate the pain.

Treatment

Most back pain is not caused by anything serious, but it can be very uncomfortable and disruptive. The pain is due to the vertebral joints being sprained not moving correctly and This causes ligament stress with the spinal muscles going into spasm. Seeing an experienced chiropractor or physiotherapist in Bristol can help diagnose the cause, with treatment, relieve pain, and guide you back to normal movement. Treatment is directed at the vertebral joints to using spinal manipulation or mobilisation complied by treatment to the soft tissue and muscles. We often use Acupuncture and electrotherapy to enhance the recovery and restore the movement and reduce the muscle spasm helping to heal. Exercises will also be given as part of the treatment to stretch strengthen and stabilise the spine.

Osteoarthritis (Osteoarthrosis)

Cause

With age, the intervertebral discs that act as shock absorbers in the spine naturally narrow. Muscles and ligaments lose elasticity, and spinal joints can stiffen or malfunction reducing the range of movement this wear and tear leads to osteoarthritis. When the wear and tear becomes more advanced, this can result in canal stenosis and the nerves can become trapped, resulting in referred pain to the legs.

Symptoms

Pain, stiffness, aching pain in the mid lower back  with muscle spasm and reduced flexibility. Symptoms often worsen after rest or in the morning. Mobility usually helps the symptoms.
