Common sciatica & femoralgia causes, symptoms & treatments

Bulging Disc

Cause

A bulging disc, at the L4 or L5 level with a prolapsed disc or vertebral joint inflammation can inflame the nerve as it exits the spine. The two nerves involved are the L5 or the S1 nerves.

Symptoms

The common signs include back pain with pain and or pins and needles or numbness which radiates to the buttock back of the thigh calf ankle and sometimes into the foot. In addition to pain you can get weakness in the legs or feet. The symptoms are normally in one leg but can be in both. Sometimes there is no back pain and this is because the nerve is being irritated by the disc and not the vertical joint.

Treatment

The House Clinics Bristol uses a treatment that we developed with neurosurgeons at French hospital to treat disc bulges with back and leg pain like sciatica. The treatment is a gentle traction table which gaps the vertebra and increases the opening for the spinal nerves, breaking the adhesions to the nerves, relieving the nerve irritation. We also use Chiropractic spinal adjustments or Physiotherapy mobilisation, acupuncture and electrotherapy. An exercise program is always provided to restore mobility strength and supply this to the spine. Degenerative Disc Disease (spondylitis) or Spinal Stenosis

Cause

The vertebra joints and discs gradually wear with age and the disc spaces become narrower. The vertebra joints become stiffer and the holes where the spinal nerves exit become narrower making nerve compression  and inflammation more likely.

Symptoms

Symptoms may include aching stiffness, pain, and radiating pain to the back of the thigh to the calf which can be in the form of pins and needles in one or both legs. The pain worsen on standing or walking and is relieved by sitting usually patients are over the age of 70.

The condition is usually found in weightlifters, rugby players and gymnasts. The person often has an increased low back curve. The increased curve puts strain onto the vertebral  joints above the level of the problem which produces the back pain. In severe cases the nerves can be irritated sciatica leg pain may result.

Symptoms

Back Pain and or Sciatica in Pregnancy

Cause

During pregnancy, the hormone relaxin is secreted into the bloodstream which serves two loosen and soften ligaments of the spine and pelvis to allow for the baby to pass through the pelvic canal during birth. The slackened ligaments predispose a pregnant lady to sprain of the lower back and pelvic  joints and occasionally the sciatic nerve may be irritated resulting in leg pain.

Symptoms

The pain is in the buttock and radiates down the back of the thigh to the calf just the same as sciatica caused by a disc problem.
