In a sprain the joint capsule which seals the joint and the ligaments which connect bone to bone are overstretched or torn these injuries are common in a football rugby running and racket sports

Most common joints effected are the  wrist in upper limb or knee or ankle in lower limb.

Symptom

The joint is normally painful, swollen ,can be red and is difficult to move or when weight bearing. After day or so, bruising may occur

Treatment

At the House clinics after the diagnosis made hands-on chiropractic or physiotherapy treatment using ice initially for pain and swelling and combination of treatments to the joint and associated muscles using frictions, mobilisation, manipulation, acupuncture and electrotherapy. A tailored and graded rehabilitation exercise program is designed to support recovery, restore mobility and strength.

Strain

Cause

A term normally attributed to a muscle injury.

A strain occurs when the muscle is overstretched as a result of overload, sprinting or explosive movements which cause muscle fibres to tear. Most commonly affected muscles are hamstrings, quadriceps, calf muscles and biceps.

Symptom

There is usually a sharp pain at the time of injury with swelling and bruising occurs within 2/3 days with difficulty in using that particular muscle.

Treatment

Very early stages ice should be applied to the injured area for about 15 minutes every hour to reduce bleeding and swelling followed by chiropractic or physiotherapy treatment which would include hands-on muscle therapy, acupuncture, electrotherapy to promote the healing followed by a rehabilitative exercise program.

Hamstring Strain

Cause

A hamstring strain is an injury to one or more of the 3 hamstring muscles, which are located at the back of the thigh. This strain occurs when the muscle fibers are stretched too far or torn, often due to activities involving sprinting, jumping, or sudden changes in direction.

Symptom

Common symptoms of a hamstring strain include:

  • Sudden pain in the back of the thigh, often felt during physical activity.
  • Swelling and tenderness in the affected area.
  • Muscle spasms or weakness in the leg.
  • Difficulty walking or straightening the leg.

Treatment

Treatment for a hamstring strain typically involves  in the immediate post injury 24 hours Avoid activities that cause pain and let the muscle heal.Ice -Apply ice packs to the injured area for 15-20 minutes every few hours to reduce swelling.

  • Compression Use elastic bandages or compression wraps to minimize swelling.
  • Elevation Keep the leg elevated above heart level to reduce swelling.
  • Pain Relief Over-the-counter pain relievers (like ibuprofen or acetaminophen) can help manage pain and inflammation.
  • Hands-on chiropractic or physiotherapy deep tissue massage Acupuncture electrotherapy will speed up the healing
  • Rehabilitation Exercises  Once the pain subsides, physical therapy and specific exercises can help restore strength and flexibility.
  • Gradual Return to Activity  Slowly return to sports or activities, ensuring to warm up adequately and avoid sudden intense movements.

In severe cases, where there is a complete tear, surgical intervention may be necessary. Always consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment plan.

Tendon Injuries (which are the attachment of the muscle to the bone)

Cause

This is when the tendon has become inflamed or slightly torn or thickened  causing a  tendinitis or tendinopathy.

Tendon injuries are normally an overuse injury and onset is  gradual and common in the lower limb are the achilles,  patella and in the upper limb rotator cuff  shoulder ,wrist extensors (tennis elbow) and wrist extensors (RSI)

Symptom

Localised pain with activity which gets stiff  after rest and reduced strength of that muscle.

Treatment

In very early stages ice should be applied to the injured area for about 15 minutes every hour followed by chiropractic or physiotherapy treatment which would include hands-on muscle therapy, acupuncture, electrotherapy to promote the healing followed by rehabilitative exercise program.

Ligaments injuries

Cause

This occurs when the joints are stretched beyond their elastic limit and the ligament that supports that joint is sprained or torn

The most common being in the  knee ACL anterior cruciate ligament, MCL medial collateral ligament and the deltoid ligament complex in the ankle.

Symptom

Pain and swelling instability of the joint.

Treatment

Depending on severity treatment involves hands-on friction acupuncture  electrotherapy and graded exercise with rehabilitation program

When there is a complete tear and orthopaedic opinion is necessary.
